23/02/2011

                                                                    PRESS RELEASE

FIRST BELL RUNG TO COMMEMORATE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL’S 106TH ANNIVERSARY

The South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE) today joined other major financial markets globally to commemorate the 106th anniversary of Rotary International. Presidents of Rotary Clubs in Suva gathered at the Exchange office to ring the very first bell to mark this celebratory event. The bell ringing is part of the international program to honour of Rotary’s 106th anniversary and its efforts to end polio. This inaugural event also supports and congratulates Sanofi Pasteur, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in France for its contribution towards providing millions of doses of the oral polio vaccine to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Sanofi Pasteur is the vaccines division of Sanofi-aventis Group and is the largest company in the world devoted entirely to providing human vaccines and the company will ring the opening bell in four financial markets in Europe. RI President Ray Klinginsmith will also ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City.

SPSE CEO, Ms Jinita Prasad said, “We feel privileged to partner with the Rotarians from Fiji and around the globe in celebrating the 106th anniversary of RI and congratulating Sanofi Pasteur and for such an imperative initiative. Our exchange is one of the first markets to ring the bell today to commemorate this event globally.”

She further added, “This is the first ever for the Exchange to have the bell rung to mark an important event but it definitely won’t be the last. We intend to make the bell ringing event a feature of the Exchange that can be part of any significant announcement or celebration of not only listed companies but other important institutions in Fiji.”
